Recently Grudziadz was the place of celebrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of bestowing the location act upon the town. These celebrations reminded both the inhabitants and the guests taking part about many-centuries traditions of the town.

The etymology of the name of the town has been subject of discussion between the researchers up to now. Some of them try to show, that the name comes from the word “grod”(castle), while others state it comes from "grudzista" (lump) ground, very popular on this area. There are also researchers seeing in the name Prussian roots, which was connected with penetrating Prussian elements to the line of the river Vistula.
