About the Town

Grudziądz is located on the right bank of Vistula river in the northern part of Pomerania Region, amongst main seaports (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot), Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Such location and well-developed road system are the advantages of the town. The international road E-75 (Gdynia-Cieszyn) runs 5 km from the town, and two national roads, No 55 (Toruń-Grudziądz-Kwidzyn-Elbląg) and No 16-the shortest road connecting western border of Poland with Warmia and Mazury, and further Kaliningrad, run directly through Grudziądz. In addition there are plans of the motorway A-1 which will connect the Scandinavia with the southern Europe and the clearway from Poznań through Bydgoszcz, Grudziądz to Olsztyn. Such situation makes the town attractive and gives possibilities of development.

Section: Sport

The most meritorious sports club is GKS Olimpia, with this club the name of one of the most outstanding Polish sportsmen is concerned, twice champion of Europe, a gold and silver Olympic medal winner in 3000 metres with obstacles, tragically died - Bronisław Malinowski. For many years GKS Olimpia has been organising the International Athletics Meeting and Bronisława Malinowskiego Street Race to commemorate this fantastic sportsman.
GKS Olimpia is represented in the first league of table tennis (in 2001 the table tennis section won the championship of Poland and in 1999 the section gained the vice-championship of Poland) and in the second league of athletics.

Grudziądzki Klub Motorowy have been working to 2002 year had in its history a lot of considerable successes, e.g. Grudziądz's speedway rider Robert Dados achieved the "double crown" in 1998 - he won the World Champion title and the speedway junior Champion of Poland title; the club achieved the Polish Youth Team Champion in 1997. Currently, Grudziądzkie Towarzystwo Żużlowe is continouing traditions of GKM, which is going to come back on the top of speedway in Poland. Speedway competition - Fot. G. Szukay
Grudziądzkie Towarzystwo Żużlowe, ul. Cmentarna 4, tel. (004856) 64-34-777. Grudziądz has for many years been a town with strong aviation roots. It was here, that in 1921 the Higher School for Pilots was established, which was later transformed into the Officer Aviation School and moved to Deblin.

In 1932 in a picturesque village near Grudziądz - Lisie Kąty an aeroclub was set up , which operates till today. At its airport are organised a lot of cyclic aviation events of national and international character, where over 40 air Polish and and world records were broken.

The Grudziądz aeroclub has achieved many significant successes, especially in the modelling section; in 1998 the Aeroclub of Poland awarded the Grudziądz model performers the first place in the country for results achieved both in Poland and abroad. Some successes, which surely helped to make such a decision, were e.g. winning in 1998 the world championship in the class of radio-steered racket-planes by Andrzej Szynak junior and the world championship in the class of high-altitude racket models by Sławomir Łasocha.

Other clubs with significant successes on the national sport arena are: MKS "Start" which in 1997 advanced to the first league of heavy lifting and KS "Stal" representing Grudziądz in the second league of volleyball.
An extremely important is the role played by associations and clubs propagating physical culture among disabled people. They gather 260 members, and successes the disabled sportsmen get (medals of Europe and World championships, Olympic Games) bring glory to the town. Monument of Bronisław Malinowski - Fot. M. Signerski There are three clubs and associations of disabled people: Sport Association for Mentally Disabled "Special Olympics-Poland", Sport Association "the Fit-Together" and KS of Disabled "Start". The member and alumnus of this last one is Mirosław Maliszewski - many times Polish, European and World Champion and record holder in heavy lifting. He is also the owner of the gold and bronze medal which he won at The Disabled People Olympic Games in Seoul (1998) and Barcelona (1992).

We should also mention other clubs and associations propagating physical culture: Grudziądz Karate Clubs - Kyokushin, Shotokan, KS Stomil, KS Elektryk, Grudziądz Society of Billiards Sports, Grudziądz Tennis Society, Brotherhood of Lovers of Aquatics, Divers' Club and several school sports clubs.

The sports base in Grudziądz consists of 4 stadiums, which in total can house more than 20 thousand people, (GKS Olimpia stadium - 12 thousand, GTŻ stadium - 7 thousand people), 4 sports halls with full sports infrastructure (approx. 2500 seats), tennis courts, outdoor and indoor swimming pools and sport shooting areas. On the town area there are also fitness clubs, saunas, horse riding centres and water piers and harbours.
