Grudziądz is located on the right bank of Vistula river in the northern part of Pomerania Region, amongst main seaports (Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot), Bydgoszcz and Toruń. Such location and well-developed road system are the advantages of the town. The international road E-75 (Gdynia-Cieszyn) runs 5 km from the town, and two national roads, No 55 (Toruń-Grudziądz-Kwidzyn-Elbląg) and No 16-the shortest road connecting western border of Poland with Warmia and Mazury, and further Kaliningrad, run directly through Grudziądz. In addition there are plans of the motorway A-1 which will connect the Scandinavia with the southern Europe and the clearway from Poznań through Bydgoszcz, Grudziądz to Olsztyn. Such situation makes the town attractive and gives possibilities of development.

Recently Grudziadz was the place of celebrations to commemorate the 700th anniversary of bestowing the location act upon the town. These celebrations reminded both the inhabitants and the guests taking part about many-centuries traditions of the town.
What is the origin of this name?
In the source documents this name exists in different forms, such as: Grudenc, Grudencz, Grawdencz, Graudentum, Grudentz, Grudenz, Graudenz. The etymology of the name of the town has been subject of discussion between the researchers up to now. Some of them try to show, that the name comes from the word “grod”(castle), while others state it comes from "grudzista" (lump) ground, very popular on this area. There are also researchers seeing in the name Prussian roots, which was connected with penetrating Prussian elements to the line of the river Vistula.
Grudziadz is very well situated on the transport system map of Poland regarding both international and important country roads. In the distance of about 5 km to the west of the town there is the international road E-75 linking the ports of the Tricity with the southern border of Poland (Cieszyn). The town thrue the city go two national roads: number 16 – the shortest route linking western border terminals of Poland (Slubice, Swiecko) with Warmia and Mazury regions and further with Kaliningrad, number 55 (Torun – Stolno – Kwidzyn – Elblag) and province road number 536 (Grudziadz – Rypin – Sierpc – Warszawa).
Grudziadz lies in Pomerania, on the right picturesque side of the River Vistula. The position of this town with nearly 100 thousand inhabitants, in mid-way between the big ports of the Tricity (Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot) and large economical centres like Bydgoszcz and Torun, as well as on the shortest route linking western borders of Poland with the Great Lakes.
Grudziądz has always been interested in co- operation with other towns and cities. Its first actions in this direction were concerned with Copernicus Towns Federation. Grudziądz has been active in this association since the very beginning, being one of its founders.
Following the system transformations in our country on the turn of the eighties and nineties, new opportunities to start partner relationships with towns in foreign countries appeared.
